Dirk Kuyt recently  returned to his favorite club Feyenoord after spending three years at Turkish side Fenerbahce. Kuyt became a fast  favorite among Feyenoord’s fanatic fans during his first spell at the club from 2003 to 2006, after transferring from Utrecht. He was the Eredivisie’s top scorer in the 2004/2005 season and was named Dutch footballer of the year in 2006.

Kuyt started his new spell at Feyenoord with a winning goal against his former club Utrecht and netted three more goals in the next eight games. But then, in the last two games the 35-year-old striker stepped it up a notch and scored two consecutive hat-tricks, making him the most efficient attacker in the Eredivisie with ten goals.

Kuyt grabbed the headlines when he claimed his first half hat-trick for Feyenoord in a 5:2 victory over Heerenveen. Seven days later the guy from fishing village of Katwijk aan Zee followed that hat-trick up by scoring another three goals as Feyenoord saw off AZ 3:1.

His fantastic week coincided with rumors that he was on Barcelona’s radar and that the Blaugrana want to sign him in a ‘New Henrik Larsson’ project. Catalan newspaper Sport reported that the club are looking for reasonable veteran options to provide some depth in their attack.

The report also mentions that Barca are looking at Red Bull Salzburg’s Jonathan Soriano, Valencia’s Alvaro Negredo and Al Rayyan SC’s Sergio Garcia as possibilities as they hope to emulate their signing of Henrik Larsson back in 2004. Larsson became a valuable squad addition on the cheap and won two La Liga titles and a Champions League during his two-year spell at the club.

“The quality of Negredo, Jonathan Soriano, Kuyt and Sergio Garcia does not need to be discussed. Each of them are at least 30 and have played at a high level, with  fairly high performances. Signing any of these players should not be problematic,” noted Tomas Andreu of Sport.

It is thought that Kuyt could provide a similar impact to that of the aforementioned Swede. He is top of coach Luis Enrique’s wishlist  and could possibly be the key player in another treble season.

Regardless of that, the Barcelona interest has helped the Dutchman regain his scoring form from his first spell at Rotterdam. Two hat tricks in one week are definitive proof of that.
